Data Sources

Interstride relied on publicly available data from the U.S. government for each ranking.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)

Data from ICE shows:

  • Universities by international students enrolled through SEVIS records, 2021
  • Universities by international students employed on OPT, 2021
  • Universities by international students employed on OPT STEM count, 2021

U.S. Department of Labor (DOL)

Data from the DOL shows:

  • Green card recipients and their higher-ed institutions, 2021

U.S. Department of Education (DOE)

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), a part of the Department of Education, publishes a dataset, the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), that shows:

  • The number of international and total students enrolled at a university, 2021
  • The number of international graduates from the classes of 2019, 2020, and 2021
  • The number of international staff employed at a university, 2020

Methodology per Ranking

Schools with the most international students

This ranking relied on data from ICE and IPEDS. Every year, ICE publishes a report on the number of F-1 students through the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). The percentage measures the proportion of students who are international at a given school, as reported by IPEDS.

Schools with the most international students employed on Optional Practical Training (OPT)

This ranking relied on data from ICE and IPEDS. The percentage measures the proportion of international students from the Class of 2020 who worked in the U.S. under OPT in 2021.

Schools with the most international students employed on OPT STEM extension

This ranking relied on data from ICE and IPEDS. The percentage measures the proportion of international students from the Class of 2020 and 2019 who worked in the U.S. under OPT STEM extension in 2021.

Schools with the most alumni receiving permanent residency (green cards) through U.S. employers

This ranking relied on data from ICE and the DOL. The percentage measures the proportion of international students at a university (over a five-year average) that successfully received a green card in 2021.

One limitation is the use of the five-year average. While there is a typical timeline for when international students and graduates are employed on OPT (within 12 months after graduation) and OPT STEM Extension (within 24 months after OPT), the timeline is more varied for green cards. Former international students may receive a green card right after graduation, OPT, STEM OPT, H-1B, L-1, and a variety of visa statuses at various stages of their careers.

Schools with the most international staff employed

This ranking relied on data from IPEDS. The percentage measures the proportion of total staff and faculty that is international.
